I guess I had some periods when I grew up, when I was bullied, and I think that was the thing that struck me the hardest or hit me the hardest. I read the book three years ago, a friend of mine gave it to me, which I usually hate when people stick books into your hands. That's kind of private -- to choose your own reading or viewing or music. But this one was an exception. And the vampire part of it was, well, it came with the other things. I'm not a horror director at all, so I've been mostly been doing drama and comedy before, so this is my first horrifying project.

His father, Hans Alfredson, was a legendary director, author and actor who began his onscreen career in 1965 and passed away just this month at the age of 86.
His brother, Daniel, has almost the same level of hype surrounding him as Tomas given he too is a skilled director and was behind the camera on the Swedish adaptations of The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest television series and films (with Hans also acting in the final one). - Miyazaki, H. Alfredson intentionally set the movie during the deep, dark Swedish winter, surrounded by snowdrifts, in order to capture-- you guessed it--the silence. "It's a very special sound after a heavy snowfall," Alfredson said, adding that he paid special attention to the smallest sounds that the bodies of the actors made. "[We had] a scene where we micced their eyes. A lot of human body sounds."
