Habitat loss from clearing is recognised as a major threat to biodiversity in Australia and throughout the world (Saunders et al. 1991). In Australia, clearing of native vegetation for agriculture and urbanisation has been extensive, particularly in temperate grassland, forests and woodlands (Burgman and Lindenmayer 1998; Hobbs and Yates 2000).
