Much of Grace Nicholls’ poetry offers social commentary, particularly with regard to women’s issues and immigration, but she maintains a light-hearted approach and is committed to her poetic craft. Written when Guyanese-born Grace Nichols was a new immigrant to England, her first three poetry collections (7 is a long memoried woman, The Fat Black Woman's Poems, and Lazy Thoughts of a Lazy Woman and Other Poems) all feature a distinctive woman as a central speaker who explores how her body and voice can become strategic tools in negotiating the transformation of a foreign place into a reassuring space that one can call "home." Using dense, multi-layered metaphors, these works focus on the sense of a divided identity in relation to home, a sense that is further complicated by prejudice, homesickness, and displacement. Drawing on both feminist and postcolonial theories, this thesis discusses Nichols' construction of the female body in her works as a site of defiance in the face of racial and patriarchal oppression.

It was her career in journalism that brought Nichols close to the myths and legends of the indigenous people in Guyana and through these stories she became interested in other cultures and her family genealogy.
