Arguments Against Animal Testing
-
This is an ethical and moral issue of the first order. If animals are so like us that we can substitute them for testing instead of using humans, then surely those animals have the very attributes (ability to suffer physically and psychologically, conscious awareness) that mean they deserve to be respected and protected from harm — as we would wish for ourselves.

Every year, in laboratories around the world, ‘scientists’ poison, torture and kill millions of defenceless animals in the name of ‘safety’. But, there’s nothing safe about ‘safety’ tests on animals! With poorer accuracy than many non-animal alternatives—it’s certainly not safe for the animals and it’s not safe for us.

As far back as the 2nd Century, Roman physician, Galen falsely believed that animals possessed the same physiology as humans and performed many animal experiments. However it was not until the 19th century that a market for animal experimentation was developed. Today, sadly it is big business and in Australia up to 6.5 million animals annually are used in futile and cruel experiments. Most animals are killed during or after experiments. The public is generally denied access to the facts around animal experiments in any real detail. Animal experimentation is not only cruel but also bad science and a waste of resources.
-
There are many pros and cons to the practice of animal testing. Unfortunately, neither seem to fully tip the scale to a side that pleases everyone – including the general public, government and scientists.
-
Animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products.

In a huge victory for animals, as of March 2013, the European Union (EU) has banned the sale of any cosmetics or cosmetics ingredients that have been tested on animals. This marketing ban means that companies all around the world will have to abandon animal testing for cosmetics that they want to sell in the EU. The decision follows vigorous campaigning by PETA and its international affiliates that included public protests, phone calls, and more than 20,000 e-mails.
