Writing your own Slam Poetry

Characteristics of a good slam poem and poet

1. Slam Poets really know their subject matter. If you don't have a lot of knowledge - research!
2. They use words well. They might use Thesaurus.com or WordHippo to help them find great words.
3. They are always looking and learning and some keep a slam poetry journal to keep track of ideas.
4. The study and watch other slam poets or their videos.
5. They take on their character and perform!
6. They often come up with a catchy title or first or last line to make a lasting impression.
7. They turn something ordinary into something extraordinary.
8. They keep their poem succinct and to the point - they never go over 3 minutes.

Slam Poetry is meant to be performed - not written down. A 3 minute limit is the most common maximum length.

After 2 minutes, performers get a warning, so they know they only have a minute left.

What is great about doing Slam Poetry?

1. You get to perform and share your poetry with others. You can support others and be supported.
2. The stage is yours!
3. Slams offer prizes.
4. Your words can inspire others.
5. You get to use your own voice.
6. Your voice has a big impact! More than just silently reading a poem.
7. Nervous? About Performing at a Poetry Slam? Don’t be! Everyone at a slam is supportive of one another, because they’re all poets who want to make their voices heard, just like you. If you’re still nervous, pretend you’re speaking directly to the person whom the poem is about (we're not sure whether this works, but it's worth a try).
8. Practice!
9. Perform locally and meet others.
10. Don't forget to record your slam and let Slam Poetry organizations know about it.

A Cheat's Guide to Writing a Slam Poem

1. Make a plan. Outline a story, your feelings and a message to the audience.
2. Decide on your own style and tone. Is it sad? Upbeat? Is it confused? How fast is it?
3. Write a first draft. Write a poem like a very, very short story. Sentences should be short and choppy.
4. Edit your draft. Is it in the right order? What if you change the order around? Can you use any more poetic devices? Can you find a better word, maybe a synonym, alliteration, repetition, imagery, rhyme, rhythm?
5. Write a final version. Set it out so line breaks show you when to pause. Re-read it 5 times. Then put your poem down and do not read it again for 24 hours.
7. Practice your poem. Once you have your final version, its time to start reciting it out loud. Record it and listen to it.
8. Memorize your poem.  If you get stuck, memorize it in parts - verse by verse.
