Introduction

"What happens when innocence is confronted by monstrous evil?" (Boyne, 2006, p.218).

This is the story of a young boy (Bruno) who moves from his comfortable home in Berlin, Germany during World War II to rural Poland, where he has nothing to do, no friends and no understanding of the atrocities inflicted on the people of Europe during this time. Bruno's life in the country changes when he meets and befriends a young boy, Shmuel, who lives on the other side of a fence and wears a uniform of striped pyjamas along with everyone else in the fenced area (Boyne, 2006).
