- sustainability The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance.
- urbanism The way of life of people who live in a large city.
- livability Suitable for living in; habitable; comfortable.
- urban design The process of shaping the physical setting for life in cities, towns and villages. Involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, and the establishment of frameworks and processes that facilitate successful development.
- urban sprawl The uncontrolled spread of urban development into neighbouring regions.
- suburb A district lying immediately outside a city or town, especially a smaller residential community.
- densification The act of becoming or making more dense.
- infilling The planned conversion of empty lots, underused or rundown buildings, and other available space in densely built-up urban and suburban areas for use as sites for commercial buildings and housing, frequently as an alternative to over-development of rural areas.
- zoning Of or relating to the division of an area into zones, as to restrict the number and types of buildings and their uses.
- building code A set of standards for the structural safety of buildings set forth and enforced by a local government agency for the protection of public safety.
- site coverage The proportion of a site that is covered by buildings and structures.
- infrastructure The fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or area, as transportation and communication systems, power plants, and schools.
- amenities Any feature that provides comfort, convenience, or pleasure.
- renewable energy Any naturally occurring, theoretically inexhaustible source of energy, as biomass, solar, wind, tidal, wave, and hydroelectric power, that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel.
- urban heat island A metropolitan area that's a lot warmer than the rural areas surrounding it. Heat is created by energy from all the people, cars, buses, and trains in big cities like New York, Paris, and London.

- Get to class on time and pay attention
- Take GOOD notes and keep them well organised
- Ask questions and listen when others ask questions
- Write and Review your notes after class
- Get a study group together
- Have a calendar that notes all assessment dates
- Give homework and study adequate time
- Ask for more questions on a topic if you still feel a bit shaky at the end of the exercise.
- If you get stuck, make sure you email the teacher your homework problems. Give it a good go though.
- Develop strategies for moving forward when you get stuck
- Use the feedback provided to you by your teacher.
