This article will focus specifically on Côte d'Ivoire also known as Ivory Coast, a former French colonial country in West Africa. Côte d'Ivoire has experienced a tumultuous regime history under the French colonial power.
-
In their early history, Ivory Coast remained relatively isolated. The country’s rugged coastline and lack of suitable harbors discouraged European exploration until the mid-nineteenth century. Before that time, the only French contact with Ivory Coast occurred in 1637.
-
The Ivory Coast became a French protectorate in 1844 and then a French colony in 1893 as part of French West Africa in 1904. The flag at this time was the French blue-white-red tricolour. It remained that way until the Ivory Coast became an autonomous republic within the French Community in 1958 and the modern orange-white-green vertical tricolour was adopted. The orange is said to represent the savannahs, the white is peace and the green the woods in the south.

Every middle-class Abidjani holds a dear memory of Hôtel Ivoire. Built in 1963 by Israeli architect Moshe Mayer, it was the place in town to go ice skating and see a movie (the cinema still stands, though the ice rink, unfortunately, does not). Even if you don't stay here, it's worth visiting this hotel for its unique retro African decor.

Food in the Ivory Coast was not what I expected.
I recently spent several weeks eating my way through the economic capital of Abidjan, doing my best to sample as much of the local cuisine as possible. I was expecting some similarities to east African cuisines, which generally have soft and mild flavours, but Ivory Coast food is not like that at all – it’s sharp and spicy, with extra chilis on top! -
The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (which means "ivory coast" in French), on the south coast of the western bulge of Africa, has an area of 322,460 square kilometers (124,502 square miles). Comparatively, the area occupied by Côte d'Ivoire is slightly larger than the state of New Mexico. The greater part of Côte d'Ivoire is a vast plateau, tilted gently toward the Atlantic, although the Guinea Highlands (in the northwest, from Man to Odienné) have peaks higher than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet).
