AJ Betts has created an interesting world in her new book The Hive. We read the story from Hayley’s point of view. Hayley is a young girl who has only ever known life in the Hive. All the inhabitants live in hexagonal shaped buildings, all the males together and all the females together except for the Judge and their family who live in a separate area above everyone. Hayley has a secret well a few actually and she is becoming more and more aware that something is just not right. This is a dystopian novel with a difference. The world A.J. Betts has created is subtle and gentle and very different to other Dystopian novels. A very enjoyable read.

This book has been described as a Horrible History for adults and I would have to agree. While entirely factual some of the details are lacking in this retelling of early Australian history. I found this book to be an engaging retelling of our own history from quite a different perspective. It has certainly given me food for thought and has inspired me to find out more about our what really happened during this time. I would recommend this book to history buffs who are interested in hearing our history from a different perspective.
