Christos Tsiolkas is the author of five novels: Loaded, which was made into the feature film Head-On, The Jesus Man and Dead Europe, which won the 2006 Age Fiction Prize and the 2006 Melbourne Best Writing Award.

Tsiolkas left the church when he was 15, unable to reconcile it with his sexuality. His novel Damascus asks where God dwells if not in the heavens

It's a very early memory, of my emerging from the change rooms at my local pool, holding my father's hand, looking up to see a boy bouncing on the diving board, his arms wrapped tight around his body as he did so, as if he was shivering, as if he were freezing cold; and then suddenly jumping into the air and plunging into the depths of the water. For Christos Tsiolkas, the pool was a place where the division between him being Greek and being Australian started to unfold. His parents hailing from the mountains of rural Greece didn’t know how to swim, and so with their son learning to swim a separation commenced.
