REEs, or Rare Earth Elements, are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements found in the Earth’s crust. They aren’t actually “rare” in terms of how much exists, but they are rarely found in concentrated amounts, which makes mining and extracting them difficult. They are used in building electronics, as well as various types of "green", military, and aerospace technology.
