STORY: Growing up near the industrial suburbs of Sydney, Jack left school at the age of 15 and went to work at the State Brickworks in Homebush Bay with his father. In 1965, disillusioned by the arduous and repetitive nature of factory work, Jack enlisted in the army with two of his mates and was deployed to Bien Hoa province in Vietnam. He was unprepared for the tropical climate, dense vegetation, and guerilla-style tactics of the Viet Cong, but he quickly learned how to navigate these difficulties and threats with the help of his squad.
